Bak Chang

Bak Chang is a Hokkien hawker dish loved across Singapore. Here is what it is, what to order and where to try it, starting at Amoy Street Food Centre.

What is Bak Chang?

Glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves and boiled for hours, filled with pork, mushroom, chestnut and salted egg yolk. Eaten all year, and especially at the Dragon Boat Festival. Bak Chang is part of Singapore's hawker culture, recognised by UNESCO in 2020 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Beat the office crowd before noon

We don't rank individual stalls. Every hawker centre has its own favourites, so ask the regulars and follow the queue.
