Malay and Javanese · Singapore hawker food
Satay
Satay is a Malay and Javanese hawker dish loved across Singapore. Here is what it is, what to order and where to try it, starting at Lau Pa Sat, Raffles Quay.
What is Satay?
Grilled skewers of marinated meat served with peanut sauce, ketupat rice cakes, cucumber and onion. At Lau Pa Sat, the road beside the market closes every evening and becomes Satay Street. Satay is part of Singapore's hawker culture, recognised by UNESCO in 2020 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
